The Nutrition, Family, and Consumer Science program helps people
better manage their family and personal resources. The program
provides consumers -- especially the parents of young children
-- with information in food and nutrition, food safety, food preservation,
and money management. Training and information is also provided
to health and education professionals such as nurses, foster care
parents, home health aides residential care operators, and teachers.
The Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program provides food and
nutrition information to food stamp recipients and to teachers
whose students are from families that receive food stamps. Information
is provided to help individuals improve their diets with menu
planning, food safety, food buying, and meal preparation. Workshops
on nutrition have peen presented at homeless shelters, residential
treatment facilities, and community agencies. The program uses
cooking demonstrations, videos, and printed materials to inform
participants about the benefits of proper nutrition and to present
low-cost recipes that meet nutritional needs.
